Secure a Business Name

Use Maryland Business Express to search what businesses already exist , or reserve a name even before you are ready to register.

Register

When you are ready to make your business official, use Maryland Business Express to register your business in Maryland.

Get a Federal Employer Tax Identification Number

Note: You must have a Maryland SDAT Identification Number before you can apply for a FEIN. You will receive this number when you register your business with the state. 
Apply through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Small Business Administration Funding Programs

Find funding to start or grow your business, or to help you recover after a declared disaster. 

HubZone Program

This federal contract awards incentives to fuel small business growth in historically underutilized business zones with a goal of awarding at least 3% of federal contract dollars to HUBZone-certified companies each year. View Brunswick Hub Zone map.

Maryland Financial Incentives for Businesses

The state offers tax credits, grants, and loans for businesses. 

Rehabilitated Vacant Commercial Structures Property Tax Credit 

An incentive for vacant structure rehabilitation and capital investment in existing infrastructure for eligible properties. 

Maryland Historic Revitalization Tax Credit Program

State and federal credits are available for commercial, small commercial projects, and homeowners to encourage private investment in rehabilitating historic buildings.

City of Brunswick Enterprise Zone

A state-designated program designed to help promote growth within the 1,371 acres inside city limits. 

Neighborhood BusinessWorks

Flexible financing for new or expanding small businesses and nonprofit organizations for projects located in Sustainable Community or Priority Funding Area. Both apply to the City of Brunswick.

Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy Loans (C-PACE)

Funding is available as 100% up-front capital to commercial property owners to implement building upgrades that save energy and lower operating costs.

Local

Brunswick Main Street Façade Improvement Program

To date, this program’s awards have helped create infrastructure improvements valued at nearly $1.5 million in the downtown district. It offers funds to businesses in the Brunswick Main Street District to improve individual building façade appearances in external, public areas and make exterior building improvements that are permanent and not cosmetic.

Obtain Business Licenses

A State of Maryland business license is required for most businesses, including retailers and wholesalers. A trader’s license is required for buying and re-selling. Occupational or Professional licenses may be required if you or your employees work in certain fields.

Obtain Proper Local & County Permitting & Zoning Approvals

Businesses, including home-based businesses, are subject to County or municipal zoning restrictions. Consult the City of Brunswick Zoning Districts & Maps to determine zoning requirements before signing a lease or contract.

The Combined Registration Application (CRA) allows you to register for Sales & Use Tax and Employer’s Withholding Tax accounts through one form.

Complete Tax and Eligibility Forms

Federal W-4: Employees’ Federal Withholding Certificate

Maryland MW507: Employee’s State Withholding Certificate

Form I-9: Verify employment eligibility and keep on file (do not submit).

Businesses must report new hires within 20 days to the Maryland New Hire Registry
